Overview
Barista is an AI-powered specialty coffee guide. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is used. We collect only what is necessary to provide the app's features.
Camera
Barista uses your device camera to analyze coffee bags, whole beans, and brewing equipment. When you scan an image:
- The image is processed by our AI service (Google Gemini Vision) to identify the coffee's origin, roaster, process, roast level, and other characteristics.
- Images may be stored in your account's secure cloud storage (AWS S3) so they can be displayed in your chat history.
- Images are never sold, shared with third parties for advertising, or used to train AI models.
- Camera access is used only when you explicitly initiate a scan. We do not access your camera in the background.
Location
Barista uses your approximate location to find specialty coffee shops near you. When you use the Shops feature:
- Your location is used solely to return nearby coffee shop results.
- We do not store your location history.
- Location is never shared with third parties for advertising or tracking purposes.
- Location access is only requested when you open the Shops tab. You can deny location permission and use the app's other features without restriction.
Account & Chat Data
When you create an account, we store:
- Your email address (used for sign-in via AWS Cognito).
- Your brew chat sessions, including messages, tags, and session names, stored in a secure AWS database linked to your account.
- Gear preferences you configure within the app.
Your chat data is private to your account. We do not read, sell, or share individual chat content.
AI Processing
Barista uses Google Gemini to power its coffee analysis and brew recommendations. When you send a message or scan an image:
- Your message content or image is sent to Google Gemini's API for processing.
- This processing is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- We pass only the minimum content needed to generate a response.
Data Retention
- Chat sessions and associated images are retained until you delete them or close your account.
- You can delete individual sessions from within the app at any time.
- To request full account deletion, contact us at the address below.
Third-Party Services
Barista relies on the following third-party services:
- AWS (Amazon Web Services) — authentication, database, and file storage.
- Google Gemini — AI language and vision model processing.
- Expo / React Native — app runtime and delivery.
Children's Privacy
Barista is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
